Vinyl Care Tips: How to Clean & Protect Your Records

Vinyl records can last a lifetime — if they’re cared for properly. Whether you’re new to collecting or a longtime crate digger, good vinyl care protects sound quality and long-term value.

Here’s how we recommend caring for your records at Invincible Vinyl.

Always Store Records Vertically

Records should be stored upright, never stacked flat. Stacking causes warping over time and can permanently damage your collection.

Use sturdy shelving and avoid overcrowding.

Use Inner and Outer Sleeves

  • Inner sleeves: Prevent scratches and static
  • Outer sleeves: Protect album jackets from wear and moisture

We recommend replacing old paper sleeves with anti-static inner sleeves whenever possible.

How to Clean Vinyl Records Safely

For light cleaning:

  • Use a carbon fiber brush before each play

For deeper cleaning:

  • Use a vinyl-safe cleaning solution
  • Microfiber cloth or record cleaning machine
  • Never use household cleaners

Avoid tap water — minerals can damage grooves.

Keep Records Away From Heat

Heat is vinyl’s worst enemy. Avoid:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Cars
  • Heat vents or radiators

Warped records rarely recover.

Handle Records by the Edges

Touching the grooves leaves oils and dirt that affect sound quality. Always handle records by the edges or label.

Proper Turntable Setup Matters

A poorly set up turntable can damage records:

  • Correct tracking force
  • Aligned cartridge
  • Clean stylus
